Never explained in the game
Chara's plan failed, resulting in the deaths of Chara and Asriel. Many years later Alphys is making some experiments with a substance called "determination", while doing so Alphys injected dying monsters with determination with hopes of making their SOULS last after their death AND also injected a little golden flower... Asriel's consciousness went into that flower...
