Questão 43 - Leia o texto para responder à questão. Should children be prohibited from using social media? Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced plans for a social media ban for children in Australia. The planned changes would decide on a minimum age − between 14 and 16 − for the use of social media. He said the impact of the sites on young people is causing “harm”, and that they should be outside playing sport instead. However, not everyone agrees with the plan. Some experts worry that children may be excluded from participating in the digital world or may try to hide their online activity. Also, campaigners have argued that rather than stopping young people using social media altogether, the pressure should be on social media companies to do more to protect young users. Questão 45 - Leia o texto para responder à questão. Recent research has led experts to different conclusions about the impact of mobile phone use on young learners. One international study found it distracted students from their lessons, whereas another similar study could not see a significant difference in academic performance between schools with mobile phone bans and those without. To add yet more complexity to the debate, one study even discovered that students got lower scores on their tests after schools banned technology from the classroom. While research keeps generating such contradictory results, it seems educators are no closer to a definitive answer. However, these studies still have something important to tell us about the impact of mobile phone use on learning. They all focused on different types of schools and tracked different metrics, suggesting that the benefits and drawbacks of the technology are highly context-dependent. British Council. Questão 42 - Qual o tema tratado no texto? The Printing Press Some key paragraphs from the paper “Information Technology and Economic Change: The Impact of the Printing Press” by American University professor Jeremiah Dittmar: “The first printing press was established around 1450 in Mainz, Germany. Contemporaries saw the technology ushering in dramatic changes in the way knowledge was stored and exchanged. Printing was from the outset a for-profit enterprise. But what was the economic impact of this revolution in information technology? By lowering the cost of disseminating ideas, did the explosion of print media erode the importance of location? I find that cities in which printing presses were established 1450-1500 had no prior growth advantage, but subsequently grew far faster than similar cities without printing presses. My work uses a difference-in-differences estimation strategy to document the association between printing and city growth. The estimates suggest early adoption of the printing press was associated with a population growth advantage of 21 percentage points 1500-1600, when mean city growth was 30 percentage points. The difference-in-differences model shows that cities that adopted the printing press in the late 1400s had no prior growth advantage, but grew at least 35 percentage points more than similar non-adopting cities from 1500 to 1600.” PERRY, M. Once upon a time, appliances1 were built to be durable and had simple, easily fixable mechanical parts. Fifty years ago, our appliances lasted2 a lot longer. According to Ryan Finlay, an appliance technician who founded the online appliance repair school TradeSkills, appliances built in the 1970s generally lasted between 30 to 50 years. And if they broke along the way, they were made so that you could fix them. But as technicians will tell you, appliances aren’t made to be durable anymore. Now, we replace these hulking machines3 made with cutting edge, 21st century technology at the hasty rate of about a decade, or even less. If that doesn’t make sense to you, you’re not alone. I’m here to explain why appliances don’t last — and what we can do about it. GREEN, A. M. You’re not crazy: your appliances were built to fail you.
